Ashtanga Yoga. It's hard. It's worth it!

I was at an Ashtanga workshop with the legendary David Swenson earlier this year. David has so many fantastic one-liners, but one stuck out above the rest: "Asthtanga yoga. It's not for you. It's hard and it makes you feel really good." This was David's way of appealing-by-NOT-appealing to the masses and it resonated with me.

Yes, Ashtanga Yoga is hard -- brutally so at times. So why do it?
Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and physically demanding form of yoga that involves synchronizing breath with a progressive series of postures. While individual experiences may vary, here are some research-based benefits associated with practicing Ashtanga yoga:
Physical fitness: Regular practice of Ashtanga yoga can improve physical strength, flexibility, and stamina. Research has shown that it can enhance muscular endurance, balance, and cardiovascular health.
Stress reduction: Ashtanga yoga incorporates deep breathing techniques and mindfulness, which have been found to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Studies have shown that yoga practices like Ashtanga can decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol and improve overall mental well-being.
Mental focus and concentration: Ashtanga yoga requires focused attention and concentration as you move through the series of poses. Research suggests that regular practice of yoga, including Ashtanga, can enhance cognitive function, attention span, and working memory.
Mind-body connection: Ashtanga yoga emphasizes the integration of breath, movement, and mental focus, promoting a heightened sense of body awareness. Studies have shown that practicing yoga can enhance body awareness, improve proprioception (awareness of body position), and foster a greater sense of self-acceptance and self-esteem.
Flexibility and joint health: Ashtanga yoga involves a wide range of dynamic movements and deep stretching, which can enhance flexibility and joint mobility. Regular practice may help prevent injuries, reduce muscle imbalances, and improve overall joint health.
Cardiovascular health: Ashtanga yoga is physically demanding and can provide a cardiovascular workout. Research has indicated that regular yoga practice can improve heart health, including lowering blood pressure, reducing LDL cholesterol levels, and enhancing overall cardiovascular fitness.
Emotional well-being (It makes you a nicer person!): Ashtanga yoga combines physical movement, breath control, and meditation, which can have a positive impact on emotional well-being. Research suggests that yoga practices like Ashtanga can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and improve mood regulation. At least for me, this practice makes me a nicer, more tolerant person. There's nothing having your ass kicked for 90-minutes to humble you and make you realize that you are indeed nothing more than a tiny speck within a wide world of otherness.
It's important to note that while research supports these benefits, individual experiences may vary. Ashtanga yoga, like any form of exercise, should be practiced with proper guidance and modifications as needed, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
